According to the CBI 164 million sick days were taken in 2005 costing UK businesses an estimated £13bn. Of the 400 companies surveyed as many as 13% of days lost to sickness in 2005 were considered non-genuine by employers - in other words staff 'pulling sickies' - at a cost to the
economy of £1.2bn.

To address the situation, Arvato Services introduced a staff incentive scheme to not only reward staff for not taking unnecessary days off but to also improve the atmosphere within the contact centre. As well as awarding teams and individuals for attendance, there were other reward and recognition initiatives leading to a major draw at the end of the scheme. In order to make the sickness and attendance initiative a success, a reward had to be chosen that all staff would actually want and therefore motivate them to achieve their objectives and receive the reward.

Love2shop gift vouchers were chosen as they provide a huge variety of high street shops to be spent in and they appeal to an even wider range of people. Vouchers were ordered on a weekly basis and handed out by the management team. By using this method to distribute a tangible
award, it gave them a chance to know and meet all staff from all campaigns. According to Rachel Platt and the Operations Team attendance improved by 15% leading to a better team moral and better job satisfaction as staff wanted to ensure they achieved their objectives in order to receive Love2shop vouchers.
