Tips on how to retain staff, boost motivation in the workplace and offer benefits which employees actually want have recently been discussed at a conference.

HireStrategy, which was honoured in the Washington Business News as one of the Best Places to Work 2006 in the US, has spoken to a gathering of business proprietors on how their companies too can become "great places to work".
President and chief executive officer at the firm, Paul Villella, addressed the importance of how staff are affected by rising fuel prices and the current economic slowdown, and how their employers can help.
For example, gas gift-cards are one way to subsidise petrol, utilising them as reward for high performance.
"Anything that organisations can do to help their employees deal with these challenges will be appreciated," he added.
Other issues explored included allowing staff to achieve a good work-life balance through the introduction of flexible working and telecommuting.
Measures brought in to assist employees with rising fuel costs in the UK include the HM Revenue and Customs raising the advisory fuel rates reimbursable for company car drivers.
