Companies should offer workers a degree of choice when giving them

long service awards, it has been suggested.Susan Lagalski, a human resources representative at Guardian Industries, told Freep.com that workers now expect more than the traditional wristwatch when they have served a long period of time with an employer.

"We try to offer items that people will actually fit into their lifestyle," she explained. "We have jewellery. We have binoculars and telescopes. We have vases and globes and digital cameras."

Anthony Luciano, senior vice president of marketing for TharpeRobbins, also told the news provider that firms should consider rewarding their employees throughout their careers, rather than relying on long service awards.

Mr Luciano added that the actual value of a corporate gift is often less important to the recipient than the fact their achievements are being recognised in front of their colleagues.

Earlier this week, management consulting firm Hay Group claimed that companies are increasingly using employee rewards to support their recruitment and retention goals.
