employee retention and productivity by supporting the health of their workers, it has been suggested.According to the Trades Union Congress (TUC), improving the working lives of staff leads to a range of benefits including loyal and motivated employees and more efficient organisations.

The group recommended that firms attempt to create a good work/life balance, develop a friendly culture, employ high-quality managers and set sensible hours and workloads to safeguard the wellbeing of their staff.

It also claimed that the benefits of these measures include employees feeling more rewarded and fulfilled, increased productivity, improved retention and higher levels of motivation.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber commented: "The economic rewards of a national 'good work' culture could be huge. The benefits to individual workers of leading more fulfilled and healthier live are also enormous."

Last week, a spokesperson for the TUC claimed that flexible hours allow staff to achieve better work/life balances, which improves employee motivation and reduces stress and absence rates.
