high work demands leading to burnout

employee motivation, an expert has pointed out.Speaking in a podcast, Cambridge Judge Business School lecturer in human resources and organisations Dr Jochen Menges noted that many companies are expecting their employees to work with extra effort for most of the time.

However, he explained that this demand will eventually damage an organisation, as its workers have more chance of suffering from "burnout" - leading to reduced productivity.

"The frenetic pace that they put forward saps the employee's motivation. In the end, that leads to the organisation suffering from performance deteriorations," the expert continued.

Dr Menges added that people need to be aware that they can often get more work done if they have adequate periods of rest between bursts of high-intensity activity.

Recently, Chartered Management Institute head of public affairs Mike Petrook said that the current culture of overwork in the UK is damaging companies' morale and job satisfaction levels.
