Leadership 'has made effects on performance'

Businesses need to be aware that leadership can affect their employee engagement in a range of ways, it has been claimed.

Research published by development consultant Psychometrics Canada showed 85.5 per cent of workers think that good leadership causes increased motivation.

In addition, 85.1 per cent said it leads to improved working relationships, while 80.7 believe it encourage better team performance.

However, the poll also found that poor leadership can result in several negative consequences for companies, including a lack of morale, feuding staff members, project failure and skills not being utilised.

Shawn Bakker, a psychologist at Psychometrics Canada, commented: "Our results show that leadership is influential and organisations with effective leadership in place are realising a wide range of benefits including increased financial performance and improved work relationships."

Ruth Spellman, chief executive of the Chartered Management Institute, recently said that firms need to focus on effective talent management systems to attract and retain the best possible employees.
