Britons are planning to spend an average of £550 on Christmas this year, with many set to use

consumer sales promotions to lower their expenditure, research shows.More than a third of people (38 per cent) will use discount vouchers, while 34 per cent will capitalise on their retailer reward points. Also, one in ten people (nine per cent) will send homemade presents, according to research from the HSBC Christmas Spending Survey.

Ashtar Antoine, HSBC head of current account management, said: "It is clear that the majority of households are looking to get the best value for their money, with discount vouchers and retailer reward schemes popular methods of saving cash."

The spokesperson added that over two-thirds of people will fund their Christmas shopping from their salary or other sources of income.
