sense of control boosts employee motivation

Employee motivation can be bolstered if workers know their efforts are making a valued contribution to their organisation, it has been claimed.Writing on news-press.com, stress and wellness coach Jacquelyn Ferguson suggested that "true motivators" are factors which increase an employee's sense of control and causation.

The expert pointed out that people need to see that their actions lead to concrete results and said that once this outcome is realised, their motivation will improve.

She claimed that one way for bosses to capitalise on this is to allow people to work as they wish so long as the desired end is achieved, rather than dictating how they have to perform a task.

Turning to the issue of employee incentives, Ms Ferguson said they have to be based on the performance of the individual, writing: "Rewards tend to work better for recognising people's efforts if given with no strings or manipulative intentions attached."

Last week, the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development said that many companies are now reviewing their employee rewards schemes to see how effective they are in motivating and retaining workers.
