employee recognition and retention are among the leading concerns of small businesses.A poll carried out by human resources firm TECHNOCompetences revealed that 21 per cent of small companies cited staff recognition as one of the main issues facing them in the current business climate, while 16 per cent singled out employee retention.

The survey also showed that 48 per cent of small firms want to improve their recruitment processes to help them attract the best workers and 39 per cent are worried about a shortage of skilled workers.

Sylvie Gagnon, general manager of TECHNOCompetences, commented: "It is interesting to see the point to which companies are concerned about the quality of recruiting and retention of employees."

She also noted that skilled workers are essential if small companies are to develop a competitive advantage in the post-recession market.

Recently, Lindi Dickinson, head of people placements in Softline Pastel, claimed that an effective recruitment strategy and corporate benefits could help firms to improve their employee retention rates.
