Small businesses are beginning to use social networking media to attract new consumers and build

customer loyalty, research has suggested.A poll carried out by Daryl Willcox Publishing found that 54 per cent of small and medium-sized enterprises have a social media presence, with 68 per cent saying they use the platforms for networking.

The survey also showed that 68 per cent are active in social media to attract new customers, while 61 per cent are attempting to build brand awareness.

Daryl Willcox, founder of Daryl Willcox Publishing, commented: "The number of companies participating in social media on a daily basis shows the growing importance of this marketing channel."

In addition, the poll discovered that LinkedIn is the most popular social networking site with businesses, used by 73 per cent, while 64 per cent are on Facebook and 63 per cent have a presence on Twitter.

In July, Direct Marketing Association public relations manager Tristan Garrick claimed that firms can build stronger relationships with their customers by using social networking.
