The rise in popularity of smartphones will allow small companies to improve their customer relationship management strategies, according to one expert.

Recent research from the Open University Business School, Barclays and accountancy industry organisation ACCA found that 48 per cent of the country's small enterprises are using smartphones for business purposes such as surfing the internet or accessing their emails.

Commenting on the study, smartgorillas.com editor and founder Heather Mclean said the mobile communications devices have "revolutionised" how small firms go about their business, as they give access to quality applications wherever the user is.

"It enables them to always be available to their customers and improves customer relationship management so they can manage their business much better," she explained.

Ms Mclean also claimed that future models of smartphones will improve on the current offerings and allow companies to use tougher and stronger devices that are less likely to suffer from problems.
