Performance appraisals are a huge part of performance management, they provide an assessment of objectives for the previous period and how well an employee has performed. It is also a good oppotunity for an employee to voice concerns or areas for improvement.
Performance Appraisal Method
Almost every employee will receive an appraisal from their line manager, they usually take place on an annual basis but can be performed monthly. Performance appraisals will take place at the 'reward' stage of the performance management cycle as it is essentially a review with an opportunity to lavish praise if neccessary.
Conducting a Performance Appraisal
According to the CIPD, there are five elements to conducting a performance appraisal, they are:
- Positive Reinforcement
- Exchange of views
Measurement - This will be the assessment of an employees performance based on targets from the previous period. How someone performed will be a good indication of how realistic the targets were.
Feedback - Feedback will give an opportunity for a line manager give an employee information about how they have been progressing throughout the appraisal period.
Positive Reinforcement - This is a chance for a manager to lavish praise and also to provide information on areas for future improvement.
Exchange of Views - An employee can give their thoughts on how they have performed, what support they have received and if there have been any barriers which have affected performance.
Agreement - A new set of agreed objectives will be laid out in accordance with the appraisal period. This will be an agreement by all parties concerned and will include targets to be met and an appropriate reward structure.
Benefits of Performance Appraisals
A performance appraisal has several benefits in terms of performance management. It allows a manager to keep up to date with the progress of an employee without having to micro-manage, along with the chance for employees to voice concerns. A relationship that can be built from a performance appraisal can sometimes go a long way to aiding the overall success of the organisation. Individual targets set from a performance appraisal can often provide focus and motivation.
