Staff motivation
Motivating staff, particularly during a downturn, post merger, takeover or following a round of redundancies is essential to concentrate to kick-starting a more positive attitude, but can be difficult to achieve. The key to effective employee motivation is to identify and reward best practise behaviour and this objective is even more pertinent when times are tough than when business is booming.
Here are a few thoughts from Love2reward on effective motivation:
- Formalise a scheme. An ad-hoc scheme can work well, but it can lead to inconsistent awards that act as a powerful force for demotivation.
- What are the behaviours you are looking for? Is it going the extra mile, flexible working, improving the process, taking responsibility, making it right first time, or all of the above? If so, then each element must be defined and a nomination/authorisation process agreed that is understood by all.
- Inclusiveness. Nothing demotivates more than the perception that another team, department or division is getting 'special treatment'. Ensure that at least some elements of your scheme can operate as widely as practicable, e.g. does the Warehouse have intranet access to contribute to the online suggestion scheme?
- Regularly review your scheme to see which areas are not working. Is it because the rewards aren't worth the effort expended? Is it because the authorisation process is too long winded? Do the staff involved require extra training first to achieve the objectives?
How to motivate your staff and encourage the behaviours that you need, particularly in traumatic times can seem like an uphill battle. Love2reward has over 5,000 active clients across all industries, both Public and Private and has therefore amassed a wealth of experience in effective motivation.
